Favorite Posts, Mentions, and Top Comments Week of 10November2013

As you can see from the late post today, we’re still very busy with work!  I’ve worked full days Saturday and Sunday in addition to evenings during the week…  Ugh.  But Kyle deep-cleaned the entire kitchen while I was at work on Saturday, which was wonderful to come home to.  (I don’t might light cleaning but I hate deep cleaning – gross.)

We did see Gravity yesterday ($25!  I remember when…).  My work was going terribly so I knocked off at 7 PM and we went to a 10 PM showing.  We were practically the only ones in the theater.  The visuals were great, of course, and we had a wonderful conversation on the inaccuracies later.  🙂

Sorry for not leaving many comments around the blogosphere this week.  There were plenty of posts I wanted to comment on but I couldn’t take the time.  Also, I’m sorry I was slow at responding to comments on here!  I appreciate them all.

Matt Becker from Mom and Dad Money had a great point about spouses being accountability partners: “Neither one of us is much of a spender, so I’m not sure how we would divvy this up. The thing I would worry about here is becoming resentful of one another because everything is always being checked by the other in a kind of formal way. If you can handle it then I think it can be a very useful approach, but I think there’s value in having some totally free money as well.”

What inaccuracies did you spot in Gravity? It looked pretty good to me. No blaring scientific issues like most scifi movies.

During the movie there were a couple places that sort of made us lift our eyebrows, like about the spacewalking stuff at the beginning and traveling between the stations. We just googled it the next day to get a fuller list. I’ve heard Science Friday do at least one segment on inaccuracies in Gravity and Neil DeGrasse Tyson apparently had an epic Twitter rant about it. I mean, people still loved the movie, but there were those little liberties taken.

  2. Thanks for the mention! I’d be really interested in a post on the inaccuracies in Gravity as well.

      Here’s a good article on it: http://science.time.com/2013/10/01/what-gravity-gets-right-and-wrong-about-space/

It’s mostly the specifics of NASA procedures, not the filming or anything.

  3. Thanks so much for the link love, Emily! I appreciate it. Hope work calms down a bit for you soon – sounds like you have been crazy busy, but I’m glad you guys were able to get out and enjoy a movie 🙂 (PS – discussing inaccuracies in sci-fi movies like that is almost as entertaining as the movie itself!)

I also like discussing the ways movies deviate from the books they are based on. Kyle gave me a LOOOOOOOOONG narrative on that after we watched the first Hunger Games movie, before I read the book. I know I’m going to have a field day with Ender’s Game when we finally get around to seeing it, since that is my all-time favorite and most-reread book.
